Mariners continue domination at Petco Park

Baseball Betting Lines

06/29/2008 - San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer and knocked in three runs, and Ichiro Suzuki went 5-for-5, all singles, and scored twice, as the Seattle Mariners defeated the San Diego Padres, 9-2, sweeping a three-game interleague set.

Raul Ibanez and Jeremy Reed each finished with two hits and two RBI apiece for the Mariners, who have won five of their last six games. Seattle had a season- high 18 hits, of which 16 were singles. Jeff Clement added a solo home run in the win, Seattle's eighth straight at Petco Park.

Erik Bedard (5-4) was solid through 5 2/3 innings in earning the win. The crafty left-hander allowed one run on three hits, while striking out three and walking three.

"You play a ball game to win a game." Mariners manager Jim Riggleman said. "To get a sweep is obviously better yet. I feel we are playing pretty good baseball and trying to win the game without getting ahead of ourselves."

Edgar Gonzalez had two hits, including a double and RBI, while Adrian Gonzalez knocked in another run for San Diego, which has dropped eight straight and 12 of its last 13 games. They finished 3-15 this season in interleague play, worst in the majors.

Jake Peavy (5-5) suffered the loss after being touched for three runs on 10 hits over six innings. The righty fanned six and walked a batter and is now 4-1 in six career starts against Seattle.

"How can't it get any lower?" Peavy asked. "I mean 1-8 on a nine-game homestand and getting swept back-to-back at home is just not called for. We have to find a way to get better."

With the game scoreless after two innings, Seattle plated a run in the third. Suzuki got things going with a one-out single, and a base hit by Jose Lopez put runners on first and third. Ibanez then chased home Suzuki with a single.

Jose Vidro led off the sixth with a base hit and came around to score when Beltre hammered Peavy's first offering over the left field wall that landed just inside the foul pole, extending Seattle's advantage to 3-0.

San Diego got one back in the home half of the frame. After Bedard walked the bases loaded, Adrian Gonzalez lifted a sacrifice fly to center allowing Craig Stansberry to score and narrowing the Padres' deficit to 3-1.

The Mariners responded with five in the seventh. Suzuki and Lopez each singled to start the inning, and Ibanez followed with a run-scoring base hit to right, putting runners on first and second. Another RBI single by Vidro made it a 5-1 game.

After Carlos Guevara replaced Bryan Corey on the mound, Seattle continued with the hit barrage. Beltre greeted Guevara with a single to center that brought home Ibanez. Reed's two-run base hit upped the Seattle margin to 8-1.

Edgar Gonzalez singled home Scott Hairston in the bottom of the eighth before Clement homered in the ninth.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
